Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that Disney Princess actor Ming-Na Wen has joined the cast of 'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' for season 3, playing the role of Hera, the queen of Olympus and matriarch to all the Greek gods. Hera is described as 'regal, maternal, and no-nonsense,' and her character will be central to the show's exploration of family politics on Mount Olympus.
Why it matters
Hera's character is crucial to the 'Percy Jackson' storyline, as she is the wife of Zeus and the goddess of marriage and family. Her disdain for Zeus' infidelities and the resulting demigod children like Percy will create significant conflict and drama in the upcoming season.
The details
In addition to Ming-Na Wen's casting as Hera, the show has also added Jennifer Beals as Demeter, the goddess of agriculture, and Hubert Smielecki as Apollo, the god of the sun, music, and prophecy. These new castings will help bring the rich world of Greek mythology to life as the series adapts the third book in Rick Riordan's best-selling series, 'The Titan's Curse'.
- Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 3 is currently in production and will debut later this year on Disney+.
The players
Ming-Na Wen
A Disney Princess actor best known for voicing the title character in 'Mulan.' She has also appeared in the Star Wars series 'The Mandalorian' and 'The Book of Boba Fett,' as well as Marvel's 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'
Hera
The queen of Olympus and the goddess of marriage and family. She is described as 'regal, maternal, and no-nonsense,' and her character will be central to the show's exploration of family politics on Mount Olympus.
Jennifer Beals
An actress known for her roles in 'The L Word,' 'The L Word: Generation Q,' and 'Luckiest Girl Alive.' She will play the goddess Demeter, the goddess of agriculture, the harvest, and the cycle of life and death.
Hubert Smielecki
A relative newcomer who was recently seen in flashbacks on Netflix's 'Ransom Canyon.' He will play Apollo, the dazzling and charismatic god of the sun, music, poetry, archery, and prophecy.
What they’re saying
“The last line of the Sea of Monsters book is Percy looking at Thalia and saying, 'I was looking at a person who could be my best friend or my worst enemy.' There's a huge promise to that, that we just want to make sure that we play that. And it plays a lot better if Thalia has a real grudge against her father and Olympus. It makes everything to come just that much more active and real. It feels like a huge change. It's a huge shock.”
— Craig T. Silverstein, Executive Producer
What’s next
Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 3 will adapt the story of The Titan's Curse, the third book in Rick Riordan's best-selling series. However, the season 2 finale teased potential changes from the source material with the circumstances surrounding Thalia's return, setting the stage for significant developments in the upcoming season.
The takeaway
The casting of Ming-Na Wen as Hera, along with other key Greek god roles, underscores the show's commitment to bringing the rich mythology of the 'Percy Jackson' universe to life on screen. Fans of the book series can expect a faithful adaptation with some intriguing twists that will deepen the show's exploration of family, power, and the consequences of the gods' actions.
