New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced a joint exhibition of Abstract Expressionist greats Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner. The show, titled "Krasner and Pollock: Past Continuous," will be the first major presentation dedicated to either artist at the Met in over 20 years and the first joint show anywhere to cover the entirety of their careers, not just the time they were together as a couple.

Why it matters

The exhibition is significant as it will highlight the equal partnership and artistic collaboration between Pollock and Krasner, two giants of the Abstract Expressionist movement who helped define what abstraction could be. The show will explore the shared terrain and historical connections that informed their distinct artistic directions.

The details

The exhibition is curated by the Met's curator-in-charge of Modern and contemporary art, David Breslin, and associate curator Brinda Kumar, with the assistance of research associate CJ Salapare. It will feature over 120 objects, including paintings, works on paper, and ephemera, with major loans from museums and private collections. The show will trace the full arc of both Pollock and Krasner's careers, both together and apart, showcasing Krasner's influential series like "Little Images," "Umber," and "Earth Green," as well as Pollock's iconic drip paintings and monumental canvases from the 1950s.

  • The exhibition 'Krasner and Pollock: Past Continuous' will be on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York from October 4, 2026 to January 31, 2027.

What they’re saying

“These artists are equals, partners in life, giants in the history of art, and revolutionaries who defined what abstraction could be. Each found a partner who would insist on the primacy of art over life; and they both aspired to an art that was forged out of historical connections but that also promised freedom and radical possibility in a world forever changed by war. The exhibition concerns entwined lives but is also about how different artistic directions come from shared terrain.”
