Toyota has unveiled the all-new 2027 Highlander, the company's first fully battery-electric vehicle assembled in the US and its first electric seven-seater worldwide. The big, smart electric SUV features a larger size, more power, and a range of up to 320 miles. It also includes Toyota's largest panoramic glass roof and the ability to power external appliances or even a home during outages.
Why it matters
The 2027 Highlander represents Toyota's first major foray into the growing three-row electric SUV market in the US, which is expected to quadruple in sales by 2029. As the world's largest automaker, Toyota's move into this segment could have a significant impact on consumer adoption of electric family vehicles.
The details
The 2027 Highlander features a contemporary all-electric design with slim front LED lights, flush door handles, flared arches, and a tapered mid-body. It's larger than the previous model, with a 2.3-inch increase in width to 78.3 inches and an almost 8-inch longer wheelbase of 120.1 inches. Buyers can choose between two battery options - 77 kWh/270 miles or 95.8 kWh/320 miles - both of which can charge from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes. Power outputs are in line with the vehicle's size. The Highlander will be offered in two trim levels with a choice of front-wheel or all-wheel drive.

The players
Toyota
Toyota is the world's largest automaker and the manufacturer of the Highlander SUV.
Ford Explorer
The Ford Explorer is a major competitor to the Highlander in the three-row SUV segment, with sales that have been soaring in recent years.
What’s next
Toyota has not yet announced details on the Highlander's performance, towing capacity, payload, pricing, or launch into other markets.
The takeaway
The 2027 Highlander represents Toyota's first major electric three-row SUV, tapping into growing consumer demand for family-friendly electric vehicles. While the design and technology may not be groundbreaking, Toyota's reputation for reliability and mainstream appeal could make the Highlander a strong contender in this increasingly competitive segment.
