United Airlines is planning to introduce a new subfleet of 161-seat Airbus A321neo 'Coastliner' aircraft, which will feature 20 lie-flat business class seats, 12 premium economy seats, and 129 economy class seats. These planes will be dedicated to premium transcontinental routes, in contrast to United's A321XLRs which will be used for long-haul international flights.
Why it matters
United's 'Coastliner' A321neos represent a strategic move to better compete in the lucrative premium transcontinental market, where flat-bed seating has become an expectation for business travelers. This dedicated premium narrow-body fleet will allow United to free up widebody aircraft for international routes while providing a more competitive product against rivals like American and Delta.
The details
The new 'Coastliner' A321neos will feature a premium-heavy configuration with 20 lie-flat business class seats in a 1-1 layout, 12 premium economy seats in 2-2 configuration, and 129 economy class seats. This compares to United's A321XLRs which will have 150 seats total. The 'Coastliner' fleet is expected to number around 40 aircraft, allowing United to operate roughly 60 premium transcontinental roundtrips per day.
- United is expected to take delivery of the first 'Coastliner' A321neo in the coming months.
