Intellicheck, Inc., an industry-leading identity company, has released its inaugural 2026 Intellicheck North America Identity Verification Threat Report. The report provides a comprehensive, data-driven analysis of how the identity fraud landscape is evolving across financial services, retail, and other major industries, drawing on proprietary, anonymized data from around 100 million North American identity verification transactions conducted in 2025.
Why it matters
The report highlights the escalating pace of identity fraud, with Intellicheck detecting more than 200 invalid IDs every hour in 2025, each representing a potential fraud attempt. The financial impact is substantial, with consumers reporting $12.5 billion in fraud losses in 2024, much of it facilitated through identity fraud.
The details
Intellicheck's 2025 data shows that while 97.85% of IDs passed verification, 2.15% failed, equating to millions of potential fraud attempts annually. The failure rates varied dramatically by industry, with alcohol retail recording 15.1% and auto sales at 1.6%. In banking, the failure rate was 1.9% across tens of millions of verifications, posing significant risks. The report also found that AI-enabled tools are making counterfeit IDs nearly indistinguishable to the human eye, accelerating the threat.
