6 area wrestlers reach state quarterfinals

Six local wrestlers, including the Torres brothers from Southwestern, Dylan Newman and Patrick Braley from Falconer/Cassadaga Valley, Tavio Hoose from Southwestern, and Kasen Hardy from Salamanca, have reached the quarterfinals of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Division 2 wrestling championships at MVP Arena in Albany. Miles Torres of Southwestern fought back from an early deficit to defeat No. 10 Jonah Stevens of Salem/Cambridge-II 8-4 in the 118-pound prequarterfinals. His older brother, senior Adrian Torres, dominated his 110-pound match against Coda Clifford of Canton-X with a 19-5 major decision. Falconer/Cassadaga Valley's Dylan Newman had two quick pins to reach the 126-pound prequarterfinals, where he defeated 6-seed Colin Logalbo of Little Falls-III. Teammate Patrick Braley, the 5-seed at 190 pounds, survived a scare against No. 21 Benjamin Rivera of Port Jervis-IX to earn a pin and a spot in the quarterfinals. Southwestern's Tavio Hoose recorded a 19-4 technical fall victory over No. 13 Jackson Peet of Caledonia-Mumford-V in the 190-pound prequarterfinals. Salamanca's Kasen Hardy, the 4-seed at 285 pounds, pinned No. 13 Lincoln Cha of Cold Spring Harbor-VIII in the second round to advance.
