After years of planning and construction, Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn is opening its new Green-House visitor center on April 18, 2026. The 20,000-square-foot complex includes a fully restored 1895 Weir Greenhouse as well as new galleries, classrooms, and archival storage spaces. The opening weekend will feature free public programs, exhibitions, and behind-the-scenes tours.
Why it matters
As a National Historic Landmark, Green-Wood Cemetery is a major cultural landscape in Brooklyn. The new Green-House visitor center provides much-needed year-round indoor space for school programs, exhibitions, and research, while also protecting the cemetery's sensitive archival materials.
The details
The Green-House complex stitches the restored 1895 Weir Greenhouse to a modern, terra-cotta-clad building directly across from the cemetery's main gate. The new facility includes visitor orientation areas, two exhibition galleries, a classroom for K-12 programs, and a Center for Research with environmentally controlled archival storage. The project received significant funding from the city and state in recent years.
- The Green-House will open to the public on Saturday, April 18, 2026.
- The Landmarks Preservation Commission approved the Weir Greenhouse restoration in 2015.
- The final design for the full complex was not approved until 2021.
