Scientists and designers have created the world's first handbag made from lab-grown leather derived from fragments of fossilized Tyrannosaurus Rex remains. The teal-colored bag, designed by Polish tech wear label Enfin Levé, will be displayed at Amsterdam's Art Zoo museum before being auctioned with a reported starting price of over $500,000.

Why it matters

This innovative use of synthetic biology to recreate ancient materials like T. Rex collagen represents a potential new frontier for sustainable and humane leather alternatives in the fashion industry. If adopted more widely, lab-grown leathers could reduce the environmental impact of traditional leather production.

The details

The T. Rex leather was developed using a unique 'scaffold-free' tissue engineering technology that allows cells to form their own natural structure. Scientists at The Organoid Company and Lab-Grown Leather Ltd., working with design firm VML, used AI-assisted biology to synthesize new DNA into specialized cells to create a material that behaves like leather. Unlike real leather, the synthetic T. Rex leather does not require the polluting chemical tanning process.

  • The T. Rex leather handbag will be displayed at Amsterdam's Art Zoo museum until May 11, 2026.
  • The handbag will then be auctioned with a reported starting price of over $500,000.

What they’re saying

“By reconstructing and optimizing ancient protein sequences, we've designed T-Rex leather inspired by prehistoric biology and cloned it into a custom-engineered cell line. It's a bold example of synthetic biology extending beyond medicine into sustainable material innovation.”

— Thomas Mitchell, CEO, The Organoid Company

“By working with reconstructed prehistoric biology, we're introducing a material that stands on its own. Something original, rather than an alternative. In terms of scale, the long-term ambition is to see this kind of innovation adopted more widely across fashion and accessories.”

— Korsten, VML

What’s next

The T. Rex leather handbag will be auctioned on May 15, 2026 with a reported starting price of over $500,000.

The takeaway

This innovative use of synthetic biology to recreate ancient materials like T. Rex collagen represents a potential new frontier for sustainable and humane leather alternatives in the fashion industry. If adopted more widely, lab-grown leathers could reduce the environmental impact of traditional leather production and introduce novel materials inspired by prehistoric biology.
