President Trump has nominated former Federal Reserve governor Kevin Warsh to be the next chair of the central bank, replacing Jerome Powell when his term ends in May. Warsh, who served on the Fed's board from 2006 to 2011, is seen as a relatively safe pick but faces potential hurdles in the Senate due to Republican opposition.
Why it matters
Warsh's nomination comes as the Fed navigates a delicate balance between the president's desire for lower interest rates and the need to maintain the central bank's independence. Warsh's past hawkish views on monetary policy could clash with Trump's preference for easier policy, raising questions about how he would lead the Fed.
