The Animal Foundation in Las Vegas transported more than 30 shelter dogs and cats to rescue partners in Salt Lake City, Utah on Monday morning. The shelter is facing overcrowding issues and sent the animals to free up space and give them a better chance at finding permanent homes in a city with more adopters than available pets.

Why it matters

Overcrowding is a common challenge for animal shelters, especially during busy seasons. By partnering with rescues in other cities, the Animal Foundation is able to alleviate space constraints and increase adoption opportunities for their animals.

The details

The Animal Foundation loaded 28 dogs and cats onto a flight from North Las Vegas Airport at 6 a.m. on Monday. The shelter had taken in over 50 dogs the previous week from two separate cruelty cases, contributing to the overcrowding. Kelsey Pizzi of the Animal Foundation said the transport allows them to "free up space and focus on the animals who need us most." Some cities like Salt Lake City have more potential adopters than available shelter pets.
