A new WalletHub report found that Nevada has the third-lowest overall real estate property tax rate in the country at 0.47%, with the average annual taxes on a $332,700 home being $1,549. However, the state ranks 44th for vehicle property tax rates at 2.12% on a $29,100 car, meaning the average Nevadan pays around $617 per year on their vehicle.
Why it matters
Property taxes have become a major political issue as high-net-worth individuals from states with higher taxes are relocating. Experts say over-reliance on property taxes by state and local governments is unsustainable, and governments should focus on fiscal discipline and operational efficiency rather than reflexively raising taxes.
The details
The WalletHub report pulled data from the U.S. Census Bureau to analyze property tax rates across the country. While Nevada ranks very low for real estate property taxes, it has one of the highest vehicle property tax rates, coming in at 44th in the nation.
- The WalletHub report was released on March 3, 2026.

What they’re saying
“Current reliance on property taxes by many state and local governments is excessive and unsustainable. Local boards often mismanage budgets and rely too heavily on property assessments that are frequently inaccurate or inappropriate. Over‑taxation risks destabilizing housing markets and erode community wealth. Rather than increasing property taxes or shifting the burden to other assets, governments should prioritize efficiency, streamline operations, and reduce costs. Fiscal discipline and accountability must replace the reflexive tendency to raise taxes.”
— Michael Franklin, Professor
The takeaway
Nevada's low real estate property tax rate may attract more residents, but the state's high vehicle property tax could offset those savings. Experts say governments need to focus on fiscal responsibility and operational efficiency rather than relying on raising property taxes to address budget issues.
