Clark County officials have issued a demolition permit for the shuttered Eastside Cannery's hotel tower in Las Vegas, ahead of its scheduled implosion this week. The 16-story tower, which has been closed since the onset of the pandemic, will be imploded at 2 a.m. on Thursday by demolition contractor Controlled Demolition Inc.
Why it matters
The Eastside Cannery property has been a fixture in the eastern Las Vegas Valley for decades, but its closure during the pandemic and the upcoming implosion of the hotel tower mark the end of an era. The demolition is part of owner Boyd Gaming Corp.'s plans to sell the 29.5-acre site for residential redevelopment.
The details
The commercial demolition implosion permit, valued at $487,210, was issued by the Clark County Building Department on February 24. Controlled Demolition Inc., a company with experience in toppling hotels, office buildings, and other structures, will handle the explosives work. While casino implosions in Las Vegas are often public events, the Eastside Cannery implosion will not have designated public viewing areas.
