Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) aviators recently participated in two major air combat training exercises at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, alongside fighter aircraft and personnel from the United States and United Kingdom. The three-week exercises, called Red Flag Nellis and Bamboo Eagle, provided RAAF pilots and support crews with unparalleled exposure to realistic threat scenarios and high-tempo operations, helping to build critical skills and strengthen partnerships.
Why it matters
These large-scale training exercises are crucial for the RAAF to maintain combat readiness and interoperability with key allies. By working alongside US and UK forces in complex, simulated combat environments, the RAAF can sharpen its air combat skills, test new tactics and technologies, and deepen professional relationships that will be vital in any future real-world operations.
The details
The RAAF contingent included around 200 aviators, six F-35A Lightning II fighters, an E-7A Wedgetail aircraft, and support personnel. During Red Flag Nellis, they took part in missions involving upwards of 50-60 jets, testing their situational awareness and ability to coordinate effectively as part of a large multinational force. Bamboo Eagle then added elements of multi-domain warfare and agile combat employment, further challenging the RAAF team.
- The exercises ran from February 2 to 20, 2026.
- Red Flag Nellis has been held annually since 1975.

United Kingdom Royal Air Force (RAF)
The air force of the United Kingdom, which also participated in the training exercises alongside the RAAF and USAF.
Wing Commander Benjamin Meares
The RAAF officer who led the Australian contingent during the exercises.
Pilot Officer Ed
A 75 Squadron RAAF pilot who participated in Red Flag Nellis for the first time.
What they’re saying
“These large force employment exercises provide Australia with unparalleled exposure to realistic threat scenarios, advanced training with our partners and high-tempo operations.”
— Wing Commander Benjamin Meares, RAAF Contingent Leader (Mirage News)
“My biggest challenge has been building situational awareness. This is my first ever large force engagement exercise, with upwards of 50 to 60 jets in the air on any given mission. You definitely need to have your wits about you and be on top of your game.”
— Pilot Officer Ed, 75 Squadron RAAF Pilot (Mirage News)
What’s next
The RAAF plans to continue participating in Red Flag Nellis and Bamboo Eagle exercises in the coming years to maintain its combat readiness and interoperability with key allies.
The takeaway
These large-scale air combat training exercises in the Nevada desert are crucial for the RAAF to sharpen its skills, test new tactics, and deepen partnerships with the US and UK militaries - all of which will be vital for the Australian air force's future operational success.
