The recovery of a sunken fireworks barge from the depths of Lake Tahoe required a complex, multi-agency operation that navigated the lake's powerful natural forces.Incline Village TodayAfter a complex, multi-day salvage operation, crews have successfully recovered the fireworks barge that sank offshore of Ski Beach in Lake Tahoe in July 2025. The recovery effort required precise coordination between dive teams, marine crews, pyrotechnic specialists, and local agencies, all working under changing weather conditions and difficult underwater environments to locate, secure, and extract the barge from depths exceeding 100 feet.
Why it matters
The sinking of the fireworks barge and subsequent spill of pyrotechnic materials into Lake Tahoe raised environmental concerns and posed risks to public safety. This recovery operation was a critical step in mitigating the impact and removing the hazardous materials from the lake.
The details
Crews used a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to guide divers to the exact location of the barge on the lakebed, which was resting across steep terrain in near-zero visibility. They carefully installed lift bags and hawsers to gradually raise the barge from the depths, then pumped out water to fully float it before extracting the sections onto shore. Throughout the process, dive teams continued to locate and remove additional debris and fireworks materials from the lake bottom.
- In July 2025, high waves caused damage to the fireworks barge, dumping its contents into Lake Tahoe.
- The recovery operation began in early 2026 and concluded on March 29, 2026.
