The Silver City Public Works Department has announced a series of major road improvement projects that will take place across the town in 2026. Key projects include a $2 million overhaul of streets in the east Chihuahua Hill neighborhood and a $5 million upgrade to a large section of Swan Street from 32nd Street to Cain Drive, pending additional state funding. The town will also conduct its annual maintenance work on streets in the original townsite area.

Why it matters

These infrastructure investments demonstrate Silver City's commitment to improving transportation and accessibility for residents and visitors. The projects will address long-standing issues with aging roads, sidewalks, and curbs, while also incorporating upgrades like ADA-compliant intersections and new cycling lanes.

The details

The east Chihuahua Hill neighborhood project will see new pavement, curb and gutter repairs, new sidewalks, ADA-compliant intersections, and striping on several streets including Daniel, Dorothy, Victoria, Bard, and Elias. The larger Swan Street project, pending additional state funding, will include new paving, curb and gutter, ADA-compliant sidewalks on the east side, cycling lanes, signage, and striping from 32nd Street to Cain Drive. If the full funding is not secured, the improvements will end at 41st Street.

  • The east Chihuahua Hill neighborhood project is expected to be completed in July 2026.
  • The Swan Street project is slated to begin in 2026, pending the award of state transportation improvement funds.
  • The town's annual street maintenance work on A, B, C, D, E, 6th, 7th, 8th, and Kelly streets is scheduled for late summer 2026.
