Hyundai is recalling hundreds of thousands of its popular Palisade SUV models from 2020 to 2025 due to an issue with the side curtain airbags for third-row passengers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says the airbags may not deploy properly in a crash, violating federal safety standards. Hyundai is working on a remedy and will notify owners in mid-March.
Why it matters
Airbag malfunctions can lead to serious injuries or fatalities in a crash, so this recall is an important safety issue for Palisade owners. The Palisade is one of Hyundai's best-selling and most important models, so the scale of this recall is significant for the automaker.
The details
The issue stems from the side curtain airbags supplied to Hyundai by Swedish company Autoliv, the world's largest producer of airbags and seatbelts. NHTSA says the airbags 'may deploy improperly in a crash,' causing the vehicles to not meet federal safety standards. Hyundai and Autoliv are currently developing a remedy for the problem.
- Hyundai will begin mailing owner notification letters in mid-March 2026.
