Federal officials have arrested a 33-year-old woman named Natasha Ruiz who allegedly ran an illegal drug distribution ring in the oil-rich community of Hobbs, New Mexico. Ruiz is accused of obtaining multi-pound quantities of methamphetamine from a previously deported Mexican national named Arturo Chihuahua Martinez and using a network of at least eight associates to distribute the drugs in Hobbs and surrounding communities.
Why it matters
The dismantling of this drug ring in the Permian Basin region, which is a major oil and gas production hub, highlights the ongoing challenge of combating the flow of narcotics from Mexico into rural American communities. The case also sheds light on the tactics used by drug trafficking organizations to insulate their leaders from direct involvement in street-level sales.
The details
According to court documents, Ruiz and Chihuahua Martinez allegedly met at a Hobbs hotel in March 2025, where he delivered to her a pound of pure methamphetamine and more than an ounce of fentanyl. Ruiz was later pulled over by authorities and found with the drugs in a black bag. Chihuahua Martinez had previously been stopped by police a month earlier and found with nearly 20 pounds of pure meth. Ruiz is also accused of brokering the sale of over 5 grams of fentanyl to an undercover agent in September 2025, and two of her alleged associates were arrested in October 2025 for possessing several ounces of meth they had picked up from her.
