Clovis High's baseball team salvaged a win on the final day of the season-opening Cleveland Invitational, rallying from an 8-7 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Los Lunas 9-8. The Wildcats took advantage of eight walks, four hit batters, and five Los Lunas errors to overcome a 7-1 deficit and secure the victory.
Why it matters
The win allowed Clovis to end the tournament on a positive note after dropping their opener to Cleveland and being shut out by Piedra Vista. The Wildcats will look to build on this comeback win as they head into a busy week with four more games.
The details
Clovis trailed 8-7 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but junior Caden Torres led off with a single and was hit by a pitch. Sophomore Tyler Ashby then laid down a sacrifice bunt, but the Los Lunas pitcher threw the ball down the left field line, allowing the tying and winning runs to score. Senior Conrad Sepulbeda had a two-run single in Clovis' three-run first inning and finished 2-for-4, while junior Aidan Romero was 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, and two runs scored.
- The Wildcats led 7-1 going after five innings, fell behind 8-7 in the top of the seventh, and then rallied for two in the bottom half to beat Los Lunas 9-8.
- Clovis visited Lovington on Tuesday, then plays in Hobbs' Black & Gold Slugfest over the weekend, taking on Belen at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Los Lunas at 2:30 p.m. on Friday and Piedra Vista at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
