The Loveland Town Bridge, also known as the Point Pleasant Canal Bridge, will reopen to traffic on Saturday at around noon after being closed since January 5th for priority repairs. The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has completed tightening the support cables and performing other maintenance work to ensure the continued safe operation of the 1971-built bridge.
Why it matters
The bridge closure has caused significant disruption to traffic flow between the neighboring towns of Point Pleasant and Bay Head. Its reopening will restore a crucial connection and allow drivers to travel directly between the two communities without having to take a detour.
The details
The NJDOT closed the bridge in both directions on January 5th to tighten the support cables and perform other priority repairs. This work included the installation of jacking towers at the east and west abutments, replacement and tightening of the support cables, and final cleaning and greasing of the lift cables and sheaves. Strain gauge testing and counterweight adjustments were also completed to ensure proper bridge balancing.
- The bridge was closed on January 5, 2026.
- The repairs were expected to be finished and the bridge reopened by around noon on February 27, 2026.

What’s next
After the bridge reopens, the NJDOT plans to close the right lane in both directions on Bridge Avenue between Bay Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard/Rue Lido for concrete curb repairs. The road will then be repaved and restriped.
The takeaway
The timely completion of the Loveland Town Bridge repairs demonstrates the NJDOT's commitment to maintaining critical transportation infrastructure and restoring connectivity between Point Pleasant and Bay Head. This project highlights the importance of proactive maintenance to ensure the continued safe and reliable operation of aging bridges.
