Atlantic Health System has introduced the new CoroFlow Cardiovascular System with PressureWire™ X Guidewire technology at Overlook Medical Center, with plans to bring it to Morristown Medical Center soon. The system allows doctors to better assess coronary physiology, including in the smaller microvascular vessels that are often difficult to evaluate using traditional imaging methods. This can help diagnose Coronary Microvascular Dysfunction (CMD), a condition affecting the heart's smallest blood vessels that frequently cannot be detected with standard angiograms.
Why it matters
More than half of patients referred for angiograms to evaluate chest pain do not have significant coronary artery disease. Many may have CMD or coronary vasospasm, conditions that affect the smaller blood vessels and are difficult to diagnose. The new CoroFlow system can provide answers and treatment options for these patients.
The details
The CoroFlow system analyzes pressure and temperature data collected by a guidewire to estimate blood flow in the smaller microvascular vessels, allowing physicians to better determine the cause of recurring chest pain. Traditional angina diagnosis has focused on the three major arteries on the surface of the heart, but those arteries supply less than 10% of the blood flow to the heart muscle, with the majority coming from smaller vessels that are typically too small to be directly seen through standard imaging.
- The CoroFlow Cardiovascular System with PressureWire™ X Guidewire is now available at Overlook Medical Center.
- The technology is expected to be introduced soon at Morristown Medical Center.
The players
Atlantic Health System
A health care provider that has introduced the new CoroFlow technology at its Overlook Medical Center, with plans to bring it to Morristown Medical Center soon.
Dr. Lindsay Elbaum
An interventional cardiologist who recently joined the cardiology team at Overlook Medical Center and says the CoroFlow technology can help identify causes of chest pain that might otherwise go undiagnosed.
Abbott Laboratories
The developer of the CoroFlow Cardiovascular System with PressureWire™ X Guidewire technology.
What they’re saying
“More than half of patients who are referred for angiograms for the evaluation of chest pain do not have significant coronary artery disease. Many may have coronary microvascular dysfunction or coronary vasospasm.”
— Dr. Lindsay Elbaum, Interventional Cardiologist
“CoroFlow opens the door to answers that will provide patients with not only a diagnosis but also treatment options. Even in cases in which patients receive a negative result, the comprehensive nature of the system delivers peace of mind that their chest pain may not be from the heart.”
— Dr. Lindsay Elbaum, Interventional Cardiologist
“The CoroFlow Cardiovascular System can definitely be an important new tool in improving heart health among women.”
— Dr. Lindsay Elbaum, Interventional Cardiologist
What’s next
The CoroFlow technology is expected to be introduced soon at Morristown Medical Center, expanding access to this new diagnostic tool in the region.
The takeaway
The introduction of the CoroFlow system at Atlantic Health facilities represents an important advancement in the ability to diagnose and treat cardiovascular conditions that often go undetected, particularly in women. This new technology can provide answers and treatment options for patients experiencing unexplained chest pain.
