Students at Somerset County Vocational and Technical High School (SCVTHS) in Hillsborough, New Jersey recently organized a blood drive to help address statewide blood shortages. The school's HOSA-Future Health Professionals chapter and Climate and Culture Committee sponsored the event, which was held on February 2nd and collected 30 units of blood from over 50 participants including faculty, students, parents, and family members.
Why it matters
Blood donations are critical, especially during the winter months when supplies tend to be lower. This student-led effort helped to raise awareness and provide an opportunity for the local community to give blood and potentially save lives.
The details
The original blood drive had been scheduled for January 26th in recognition of National Blood Donor Month, but had to be rescheduled due to snow. On the day of the event, HOSA members assisted by overseeing sign-ins, providing information, and monitoring donors after they gave blood. The drive was held at SCVTHS using equipment and staff from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
