With the 2026 World Cup just four months away, the New York and New Jersey host committee has decided to cancel its previously announced fan festival at Liberty State Park in Jersey City. Instead, the committee will focus on a $5 million initiative to support communities, small businesses, cultural associations, and nonprofits across New Jersey.
Why it matters
The decision to cancel the fan fest and redirect resources to a broader community initiative reflects the host committee's priority to ensure the economic and cultural benefits of hosting the World Cup are distributed equitably across the state, rather than concentrated in a single festival location.
The details
Originally announced in February 2025, the fan fest was planned to be open for all 104 matches of the tournament, with tickets available starting in December. However, the committee ultimately decided to forgo the event to focus on the $5 million community initiative, which will fund fan zones, neighborhood watch parties, street fairs, and other events to engage New Jerseyans across the state.
- The World Cup is scheduled to take place in June and July 2026.
- The fan fest at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens is still planned for June 17-28, 2026.
- A fan village is scheduled for Manhattan's Rockefeller Center from July 4-19, 2026.
- The World Cup final will be held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on July 19, 2026.
The players
Tammy Murphy
Chair of the New York/New Jersey host committee's directors.
Mike Sherrill
Governor of New Jersey.
Evan Weiss
CEO of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, which is partnering with the host committee on the community initiative.
What they’re saying
“New Jersey is the beating heart of the 2026 World Cup, and this initiative makes sure that every New Jerseyan — no matter where they live — can be part of this once-in-a-generation moment.”
— Mike Sherrill, Governor of New Jersey
“The World Cup is an unparalleled opportunity to showcase New Jersey to the world and drive real economic impact for our businesses and communities. This initiative is about more than soccer — it's about making sure that the energy and investment generated by this global event flows directly to the small businesses, cultural organizations, and neighborhood nonprofits that are the backbone of our state.”
— Evan Weiss, CEO of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority
What’s next
The host committee plans to share details of the funding opportunities for the $5 million community initiative and partner with communities across New Jersey to implement the various fan engagement events.
The takeaway
By canceling the centralized fan fest and instead investing in a statewide community initiative, the New York/New Jersey World Cup host committee is prioritizing equitable distribution of the event's economic and cultural benefits across the state, rather than concentrating them in a single location.
