Defending champions Scotch Plains-Fanwood defeated Frisch 6-1 to win their second straight Kelly Cup high school hockey title. Nick Movsesian led the way with a hat trick, while Liam Bonifas, Charles Sachetti, and John Nocera also scored for the Raiders. Scotch Plains-Fanwood goaltender Lorenzo Tittanegro made 22 saves in the victory.
Why it matters
The Kelly Cup is one of the premier high school hockey championships in New Jersey, and Scotch Plains-Fanwood's back-to-back titles cement their status as a dominant program. The win also sets them up for a deep run in the upcoming Public state playoffs as the No. 6 seed.
The details
Scotch Plains-Fanwood and Frisch were tied 1-1 after the first period, with goals from the Raiders' Nick Movsesian and the Cougars' Daniel Margolius. But the Raiders took over in the second, scoring four unanswered goals from Movsesian, Bonifas, Sachetti, and Nocera to pull away. Movsesian then completed his hat trick with a late power-play goal in the third period.
- The Kelly Cup final was played on Tuesday at Codey Arena.
- Scotch Plains-Fanwood will play one more game on Friday at Clifton before moving on to the Public state playoffs as the No. 6 seed.
- The Raiders will host No. 11 Old Bridge in the first round of the state playoffs on Monday.
