Starting February 1, 2026, New Jersey airports will begin enforcing REAL ID requirements at TSA checkpoints. Travelers on domestic flights will need to show either a New Jersey REAL ID or a valid U.S. passport or passport card. Those without the proper identification could face extra screening, delays, or additional fees.
Why it matters
The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 to establish minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards. This new requirement at New Jersey airports is part of the nationwide implementation of the REAL ID program, which aims to improve the integrity and security of state-issued IDs and enhance airport security.
The details
TSA checkpoints at Newark Liberty, Atlantic City International, and Trenton–Mercer Airport will now require travelers on domestic flights to show either a New Jersey REAL ID or a valid U.S. passport or passport card. Travelers without one of these forms of identification could face extra screening, delays, or additional fees once enforcement officially begins on February 1, 2026.
- The REAL ID requirement will take effect at New Jersey airports on February 1, 2026.
The players
New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC)
The state agency responsible for issuing REAL ID-compliant driver's licenses and identification cards in New Jersey.
Transportation Security Administration (TSA)
The federal agency responsible for security checkpoints at U.S. airports, which will be enforcing the REAL ID requirement at New Jersey airports.
What’s next
Travelers who do not have a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or ID card should apply for a REAL ID through the New Jersey MVC as soon as possible to avoid delays or issues at the airport after February 1, 2026.
The takeaway
The implementation of REAL ID requirements at New Jersey airports is part of a nationwide effort to enhance security and improve the integrity of state-issued identification documents. Travelers should plan ahead and ensure they have the proper identification to avoid problems at TSA checkpoints starting in 2026.
