The Norfolk High boys golf team is transitioning from a senior-dominant squad into what coach Chris Asbury describes as a 'youth movement.' The Panthers are making big-picture adjustments, including a new winter conditioning program, that Asbury hopes will have the program challenging for state championships within a couple years.
Why it matters
Norfolk High's golf program is undergoing a generational shift, moving from an experienced roster to a young team with potential. The changes, including a focus on fitness and development, could position the Panthers to return to the state tournament and potentially contend for titles in the near future.
The details
The only returning letter winner for the Panthers is sophomore Tyler Galyen, whose scoring average was 85.8 a year ago. Galyen and three of the top junior varsity players — senior Finn Barrett (90) along with juniors Jace Gall (90) and Elliott Hansen (91) — are among the 17 candidates for the varsity lineup this spring. Asbury said he, assistant coach Aric Kasuske and volunteer coach Jeff Kuhn put into place a winter conditioning program for the first time as the starting point for the development that the players need.

What they’re saying
“'We qualified for state last year by beating Columbus by one shot at Columbus (finishing third at the district). After the two days at state, we were ninth out of 12 teams. One of our young men was close to medaling, and I felt pretty good about our scores.'”
— Chris Asbury, Head Coach
“'It's a youth movement and requires a lot of development. We have more guys on the team this year with a number of them sophomores (seven) and freshmen (three).'”
— Chris Asbury, Head Coach
“'My main message (to the boys) is that everybody has the opportunity to get better and make our team better. We have very high standards that we want to keep and encourage the boys to make progress in to be the best version of themselves.'”
— Chris Asbury, Head Coach
What’s next
The Panthers' only home meet is the Norfolk Invite on Thursday, May 14, while the Class A district host courses and seeding progress for the postseason are established later in the regular season. Asbury said a top-third finish at the Heartland Athletic Conference tournament would mean Norfolk is 'in the conversation' and could have one or two medalists.

The changes, including a new winter conditioning program and a focus on player development, could position the Panthers to return to the state tournament and potentially contend for championships in the near future.
