The No. 10 Nebraska Cornhuskers softball team swept a weekend series against the Michigan Wolverines to open Big Ten play, winning by scores of 8-4 and 5-2. The Huskers overcame injuries to all three of their catchers, with senior infielder Lauren Camenzind suiting up behind the plate for the first time since her freshman season at Arkansas. This also gave senior Katelyn Caneda her first opportunity to start consecutive games at second base since her sophomore year, and she made the most of it, going 2-for-5 with two home runs, three runs scored, and four RBIs over the two games.

Why it matters

Nebraska's ability to adapt and overcome key injuries to important players like their entire catching corps demonstrates the team's depth and resilience. The Huskers were able to maintain their high level of play and secure a crucial series sweep to open conference play, showing they have the talent and mental toughness to compete for a Big Ten title this season.

The details

With Jesse Farrell in concussion protocol and Carlie Muhlbach dealing with a back injury, head coach Rhonda Revelle turned to Camenzind to catch all three games of the series. Camenzind, normally an infielder, stepped up and prepared thoroughly with Nebraska's four pitchers, helping the staff navigate the weekend. Caneda also seized her opportunity, homering twice and driving in four runs after taking over the starting job at second base.

  • The series was played over a 24-hour span on March 14-15, 2026.

What they’re saying

“I don't know if I could be more proud of our team than I am right now, because we had a lot of curve balls thrown at us this week. People didn't know about it until Friday night, when the game started. But everybody just said, 'What do I need to do?' And we didn't let it stop us. We didn't think about what we don't have, we think about what we do have.”

— Rhonda Revelle, Head Coach

“I'm just so excited to be on this team and fulfilling my role, whatever that may be. It felt great. All my teammates were excited for me and I'm always excited for them.”

— Katelyn Caneda, Senior

“I'm excited that she got her moment and she capitalized on it. There's no one more deserving than Kate for this. I'm really excited for her.”

— Lauren Camenzind, Senior
