Catawba College's Shuford School of Performing Arts is opening its 2026 theatre season with 'Becky Nurse of Salem,' a play by Sarah Ruhl that follows Becky Nurse, an out-of-work, out-of-love grandmother struggling to make ends meet while raising her troubled teenage granddaughter. Becky also happens to be the great-great-great-great-granddaughter of Rebecca Nurse, who was executed for witchcraft during the Salem trials of 1692. When Becky turns to a modern-day witch for help — and hopes of rekindling an old romance — the results are unexpected, hilarious and thought-provoking.
