U.S. Rep. Valerie Foushee is seeking a third term representing North Carolina's 4th Congressional District, but faces a tough challenge from Durham County Commissioner Nida Allam. The race has drawn national attention, with progressive icon Sen. Bernie Sanders heading to Durham on Friday to campaign for Allam. The two Democrats have solidly liberal records, but are vying to position themselves as the best choice to fight Republican President Donald Trump's agenda in Washington.
Why it matters
The heart of the 4th District is Durham and Orange counties, two of the most politically progressive places in the South. Whoever wins the Democratic primary is almost guaranteed to win the general election, making this race a key battleground for the progressive movement. Sanders' visit underscores the national significance of the contest, as he seeks to boost Allam's campaign against the incumbent Foushee.
The details
Foushee defeated Allam by about 10 percentage points in the 2022 Democratic primary, but Allam has put on a strong showing of grassroots support this time around, kicking off the new year with a six-figure advantage over Foushee in their campaign bank accounts. Much of the financial support that originally backed Foushee is not expected to be there this cycle, as crypto billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried is now in prison and Foushee has sworn off support from the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC.
- Early voting has begun in the 2026 Democratic primary.
- Sanders plans to visit Durham on Friday, February 13, 2026.
- Trump will also be in North Carolina on Friday, February 13, 2026, visiting Fort Bragg.
