Plastics recycler PureCycle Technologies and global packaging manufacturer Toppan have partnered to develop flexible film and thermoformed packaging applications containing more than 30% postconsumer resin (PCR). The partnership has already resulted in the creation of a snack bar wrapper with over 30% recycled content using PureCycle's PureFive resin, and the companies are now targeting multiple thermoforming applications where major brand owners are seeking recycled content solutions.
Why it matters
This partnership demonstrates how innovative collaborations can deliver commercially viable packaging that addresses both regulatory requirements for recycled content and brand expectations for safety, performance, and sustainability. As brand owners face upcoming mandates to increase recycled content in their packaging, solutions like this can help them meet their sustainability commitments without compromising on quality.
The details
Through the partnership, PureCycle and Toppan Packaging Americas Holdings have created and produced a snack bar wrapper containing more than 30% recycled content using PureCycle's PureFive resin. Building on this, the companies are now targeting multiple thermoforming applications where major brand owners are seeking recycled content solutions. PureCycle's dissolution recycling process turns postconsumer polypropylene (PP) packaging into 'virgin-like' PureFive resin, removing colors, odors, additives and contaminants to meet FDA standards for food-contact applications.
- The partnership between PureCycle and Toppan was announced in February 2026.
