In the new CBS spinoff series 'Marshals', Luke Grimes reprises his 'Yellowstone' role as Kayce Dutton, a former Navy SEAL who joins an elite U.S. Marshals unit to stamp out crime in the violence-prone Montana prairie. The show follows Kayce as he bonds uneasily with his new colleagues while also tending to his ranching duties at East Camp. The series features weekly shootouts and other forms of Wild Modern West carnage, but maintains a mournful tone as it looks upon a vanishing wilderness.
Why it matters
As a spinoff of the hit Paramount Network series 'Yellowstone', 'Marshals' expands the Taylor Sheridan universe to network television. The show centers on the melancholy Kayce Dutton, a fan-favorite character, and explores his life outside the Yellowstone ranch as he takes on a new role with the U.S. Marshals. The series aims to capture the same gritty, neo-Western tone of 'Yellowstone' while introducing new characters and storylines.
The details
In 'Marshals', Kayce Dutton is recruited by U.S. Marshals team leader Pete 'Cal' Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green) to join an elite Marshals unit tackling various crimes in Montana. Kayce, haunted by his fractious family's history and personal losses, is initially reluctant but eventually agrees to the role. The team includes Miles (Takanka Means), a former tribal cop and ex-Marine; Andrea (Ash Santos), a brash Bronx native; and Belle (Arielle Kebbel), a former ATF agent. The unit faces a range of criminal threats, from bombers and white nationalists to gang members and drug dealers. One of the most provocative storylines involves a tense dispute between the Broken Rock reservation, led by chairman Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham), and the government over a proposed rare earth mineral mining site.
