The closures are part of a major corridor improvement project on I-55 in Mississippi.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced it will permanently close two ramps on I-55 South at the U.S. 98 interchange in Summit, Mississippi as part of a major corridor improvement project. The entrance and exit ramps at U.S. 98 (Exits 20A and 20B) will be closed for a weekend tie-in starting on Friday, February 27, and are expected to reopen by Monday, March 2.

Why it matters

The closure of these ramps is part of a larger $76 million project to resurface 5 miles of I-55 and raise 4 bridges in the area, which MDOT says will increase interstate traffic safety. The changes will simplify traffic flow at the interchange by reducing the number of ramps from 8 to 4.

The details

MDOT said the loop ramps on I-55 South at Exit 20A and the ramp from U.S. 98 West to I-55 South will be permanently closed after the weekend closure. In a later phase, two more loop ramps on the east side of the interchange will also be closed. Southbound drivers will be directed to use Exit 20B to access U.S. 98 at Summit.

  • The ramps will be closed starting on Friday, February 27 at around 6 p.m.
  • The ramps are expected to reopen by 6 a.m. on Monday, March 2.
