Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney accused Ole Miss and head coach Pete Golding of tampering with linebacker transfer Luke Ferrelli, alleging that Golding texted Ferrelli about a $1 million contract offer while he was still enrolled at Clemson. Golding has now responded, defending his program's recruitment of Ferrelli and stating there are 'two sides to every story' regarding the allegations.
Why it matters
The dispute between the two high-profile coaches highlights the ongoing issues with the NCAA's transfer portal system, where allegations of tampering and improper recruiting tactics have become increasingly common. The outcome could impact roster decisions and recruiting strategies for both programs going forward.
The details
Swinney claimed that Ferrelli told Clemson officials that Golding had contacted him directly while he was still a Clemson player, offering him a $1 million contract to transfer to Ole Miss. Golding has now responded, acknowledging that Ferrelli visited Ole Miss prior to the Fiesta Bowl, but denying any improper contact or offers. Golding said he told Ferrelli at the time that the starting linebacker spot was not immediately available, but that it would be his if he chose to come to Ole Miss.
- In January, shortly after the end of the college football season, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney announced the hire of Chad Morris as the school's new offensive coordinator.
- Swinney made the tampering allegations against Ole Miss and Pete Golding during an introductory press conference for Morris.

What they’re saying
“Yeah, I mean, obviously, I think there's two sides to every story, right? And so I'm not going to sit up here and use the podium as a grandstand and all that, right? I mean, that's why there is enforcement, that's why we have a compliance office, right? They do all that. The bottom line, the recruitment of Luke. He came on an official visit, right, prior to the Fiesta Bowl, and I told him, 'Hey, I want you to be our green dot Mike, but right now we got a green dot Mike, right? And that spot's not going to be available until…we have one available.' And so, I want you…he wants to be here. I said, 'But right now, there ain't a spot available. So if that spot becomes available, it's yours, right?' So it's a kid that wanted to be here, that we wanted to be here, that at the end of it came open, and he's here and we're happy to have him.”
— Pete Golding, Head Football Coach, Ole Miss
