The Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) said inmates at the Madison County Community Work Center recently completed a financial literacy boot camp. The class was offered through a partnership with the Mississippi Community Financial Access Coalition and Guaranty Bank, with 24 participants taking part in the program.

Why it matters

The financial literacy boot camp is part of MDOC's efforts to provide inmates with skills and resources to better manage their finances upon release, which can help reduce recidivism rates and support successful reintegration into the community.

The details

During the program, inmate Earvin Boglin told fellow participants that saving money requires time, self-discipline and patience, and said he learned the importance of avoiding high-cost borrowing such as payday loans. Inmate Colby Reed also encouraged his fellow inmates to stay positive and keep faith while working toward a better future. Several participants, including Boglin and Reed, were featured in photos with community work center staff following the class.
