The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced that a project to add J-turns along U.S. Route 50 through Johnson County will resume in March, with an updated completion date of June. Lane closures will occur in both directions of Route 50 when the work resumes.
Why it matters
The project aims to improve safety and traffic flow along a busy stretch of U.S. 50 west of Warrensburg. J-turns are a type of intersection design that can reduce the risk of collisions by limiting left turns across oncoming traffic.
The details
The series of intersection improvements, including J-turns, will take place from Business Route 50 west to Route 58. MoDOT says a majority of the work is already complete, but the remaining work will require lane closures in both directions of Route 50 when it resumes in March.
- The project originally had a completion date of December but was paused for the winter.
- The work will resume in March 2026.
- The updated completion date for the project is June 2026.

The takeaway
This project is part of MoDOT's ongoing efforts to enhance safety and traffic flow along U.S. 50, a major highway corridor in western Missouri. The use of J-turns is becoming more common as a way to reduce collisions at intersections.
