The Marshfield Lady Jays controlled the floor early in Wednesday's Class 5 MSHSAA Show-Me Showdown at Mizzou Arena, but the MICDS Rams surged back, riding a 35-point performance from sophomore guard Jordyn Haywood to a 59-52 win.
Why it matters
Marshfield's season came to an end in the state semifinal round, but the Lady Jays have another opportunity to end on a high note in the third place game tomorrow.
The details
Marshfield jumped out to an early lead, holding a 27-26 advantage at halftime. But MICDS outscored the Lady Jays 20-8 in the second quarter and Haywood led a 12-point run in the fourth quarter after Marshfield had taken a brief lead. Marshfield's leading scorer Peyton Ward fouled out with just over four minutes remaining, and the Lady Jays couldn't overcome the deficit despite cutting it to three points late.
- The game was played on Wednesday at Mizzou Arena.
- Marshfield will play Grandview in the third place game on Thursday at 2 pm.

What they’re saying
“We didn't get too many good drives to the basket late and they were closing out pretty well on our shooters, and we didn't have as much time as we normally do to get set. Anytime those kids are open, they have the green light to shoot it, and it just didn't fall tonight.”
— Trish Marsh, Marshfield head coach
“I'm very proud of our effort. I'm proud of our team for continuing to battle even when we went through adversity toward the end, losing Peyton with a little under five minutes, we aren't really used to playing without her. Our team continued to fight. A shot here, a possession there, I feel like it could have went back our way, but that's the thing with these games, everybody here is good and you've got to play pretty consistent for 32 minutes.”
— Trish Marsh, Marshfield head coach
“I mean, last year, we didn't even get a chance to end on a win, so it's a big blessing to be here. Not a lot of teams end up here. I'm really not taking it for granted even though it didn't turn out the way we wanted it to.”
— Peyton Ward
“Like she said, it's a blessing to be back here. I remember our sophomore year was super fun. Getting to end on a win will be huge for us.”
— Quinn Aldridge, Marshfield senior
What’s next
Marshfield will take on Grandview tomorrow at 2 pm at Mizzou Arena in the third place game.
The takeaway
Despite the loss, Marshfield's season is not over yet as they have another opportunity to end on a high note in the third place game. The Lady Jays have shown incredible resiliency all season long, and their coach is proud of their effort and determination throughout the year.
