Federal authorities have charged five members and associates of a Minneapolis gang called the 'Family Mob Gang' with drug trafficking, alleging they were responsible for distributing enough fentanyl for over 3.5 million lethal doses in the last 7 months. In a coordinated operation, 14 search warrants were executed across the Twin Cities metro area, leading to the seizure of firearms, drugs, and cash.
Why it matters
The Family Mob Gang is accused of operating an open-air drug market in south Minneapolis, using violence to push out other dealers. This crackdown aims to disrupt the gang's drug trafficking activities, which have been linked to a recent spike in shootings and homicides in the area.
The details
Before dawn on February 25th, 8 SWAT teams carried out 14 search warrants in St. Paul, Minneapolis, Bloomington, Richfield and Brooklyn Park. The 5 federally charged individuals include a 38-year-old from St. Paul, a 44-year-old from Bloomington, and 3 Minneapolis residents. An additional 7 people are facing state charges. Authorities have seized 14 firearms, 6.5 kilograms of fentanyl, 2 kilograms of cocaine, nearly 800 grams of methamphetamine, 200 grams of crack cocaine, and almost $100,000 in cash since last year, including from Wednesday's operation.
- On September 15, Minneapolis police responded to two shootings less than 12 hours apart along the East Lake Street corridor, injuring 10 people and resulting in 2 fatalities.
- The joint investigation by law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, DEA, Minneapolis police, and Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, began last year and culminated in the coordinated operation on February 25, 2026.
