Night Moves, the indie rock band from Minneapolis, has released their fourth album 'Double Life' after a six-year hiatus. The album was written by frontman John Pelant during a period of personal challenges, including the unexpected death of a family member, a drummer's health issues, and friends facing troubles with addiction and the law. Despite the difficulties, the songs on 'Double Life' offer an empathetic and impressionistic look at navigating life's complexities.
Why it matters
Night Moves has built a loyal following for their blend of country, soul, and psychedelic rock over the past decade. 'Double Life' represents the band's most personal and introspective work to date, reflecting the struggles many artists face in balancing creative pursuits with the responsibilities of adulthood. The album's themes of loss, addiction, and the search for meaning will likely resonate with listeners dealing with similar challenges in their own lives.
The details
Pelant wrote much of 'Double Life' in the band's rehearsal space, which was situated in a grim industrial area of Minneapolis surrounded by garbage dumps and foundry fumes. He was also dealing with a disruptive drug-addled neighbor who would have shouting matches nearby. Despite the difficult environment, Pelant channeled his experiences into the album's songs, which range from the empathetic 'Daytona' to the soul-searching 'Hold On To Tonight' and the vulnerable 'Ring My Bell'. After cycling through two producers, the band ultimately decided to self-produce the album, giving them more control over the final sound.
- Pelant started writing 'Double Life' in 2020 in the Minneapolis duplex he shares with his fiancée.
- The album is Night Moves' first new release in six years.
