According to a report by ProPublica, the two Customs and Border Protection agents who shot and killed 37-year-old nurse Alex Pretti during a protest in Minneapolis last month have been identified as Jesus Ochoa, a 43-year-old Border Patrol agent, and Raymundo Gutierrez, a 35-year-old CBP officer. The agents have been placed on leave as investigations by the Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security continue.
Why it matters
The fatal shooting of Pretti, who was licensed to carry a concealed weapon, has sparked widespread outrage and intensified criticism of the federal government's aggressive immigration enforcement tactics in the Twin Cities region. The identification of the agents involved is a key development as the investigations into Pretti's death move forward.
The details
Citing government records, ProPublica reported that Ochoa joined CBP in 2018 and Gutierrez joined in 2014. Both men are from South Texas and fired Glock pistols during the Jan. 24 incident. Video footage appears to show Pretti on the ground with his gun removed when he was killed.
- The incident occurred on January 24, 2026.
- The Department of Justice announced a civil rights investigation into Pretti's killing on February 2, 2026.
- The Department of Homeland Security is also investigating the shooting.
