As the tax filing deadline approaches, the behind-the-scenes machinery of the financial system grinds on, requiring careful navigation by taxpayers.Mendota Heights TodayWith the tax filing deadline of April 15 fast approaching, CPAs in Minnesota are offering advice to taxpayers on how to handle the final stretch. Scott Kadrlik, a partner at DSB Rock Island in Mendota Heights and member of the Minnesota Society of CPAs, appeared on KARE 11 news to provide important reminders and guidance for those still needing to file their returns.
Why it matters
The annual tax filing deadline is a critical time for both individual taxpayers and the government, as timely submissions and payments ensure the proper collection of revenue. As the deadline nears, it's important for Minnesotans to be aware of their options and responsibilities to avoid penalties or issues with the IRS.
The details
Kadrlik noted that taxpayers who need more time can file for a six-month extension, though taxes still must be paid by the April 15 deadline. He advised using the IRS website to make direct payments from a bank account, debit card or credit card, as the agency has made the process very convenient. Kadrlik also discussed medical expense deductions, which must exceed 7.5% of a taxpayer's income, as well as the need for those making significant charitable contributions to carefully document those claims.
