Gabe Coshenet, a senior at Byron High School, has signed a football scholarship to play at Southwest Minnesota State University next fall. But this winter, Coshenet is fully committed to helping the Dodge County boys hockey team make a deep playoff run. As one of the team's captains, Coshenet leads the Wildcats in goals, assists, and points, and is hoping to guide them to their second-ever trip to the Class 1A state tournament.
Why it matters
Coshenet's dual-sport success highlights the challenges student-athletes face in balancing commitments to multiple teams, especially as they prepare to transition to college. His leadership and production have kept the Wildcats in contention for a section title, despite the looming pull of his football future.
The details
Coshenet briefly considered giving up hockey to focus solely on football, but ultimately decided to see out his senior season with the Wildcats. He leads the team with 22 goals, 24 assists, and 46 points, and has formed a potent line with fellow standouts Camryn Koch and Nolan Steele. The trio has combined for 51 goals and 113 points, including 22 on the power play. Dodge County has won 7 of its last 9 games, including a key 1-0 victory over Lourdes, putting them in position for a high seed in the upcoming section playoffs.

What they’re saying
“Hockey is definitely, definitely something I don't want to let go yet, and it's going to be hard to do, but it's also a good thing to take in football; it'll be a good opportunity for my future. But, it'll definitely be sad (to be done with hockey).”
— Gabe Coshenet, Senior Captain (Yahoo Sports)
“Cam's a great leader, a very hard worker in practice and he's always pushing everybody to get better. He's always picking everybody up, lifting the spirits if we're down a goal. That's huge, especially from a young guy... That's something you want on your team.”
— Gabe Coshenet, Senior Captain (Yahoo Sports)
“Nolan — he's something. I really like him... He's been playing great and he's a player you're going to want to watch in the future. Very talented.”
— Gabe Coshenet, Senior Captain (Yahoo Sports)
What’s next
The judge in the case will decide on Tuesday whether or not to allow Walker Reed Quinn out on bail.
The takeaway
Coshenet's ability to balance his football future with a determined push for a hockey championship in his final high school season demonstrates the maturity and leadership skills that have made him a standout student-athlete. His commitment to the Dodge County Wildcats, even with a college scholarship waiting, is an inspiring example of putting team goals ahead of individual pursuits.
