Gabe Coshenet, a senior forward for the Dodge County boys hockey team, has committed to play college football at Southwest Minnesota State University in the fall. However, Coshenet has not given up on his hockey career just yet, as he leads the Wildcats in goals (22), assists (24), and points (46) through 23 games this season. Coshenet and his linemates, Camryn Koch and Nolan Steele, have helped the Wildcats to a 15-7-1 record and a 7-1-1 stretch over the past month, putting them in contention for the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Section 1, Class 1A playoffs.
Why it matters
Dodge County's hockey team has a chance to make a deep playoff run this season, and Coshenet's leadership and production have been crucial to their success. The Wildcats are aiming to reach the Class 1A state tournament for the second time in program history and first time since 2021, and Coshenet's decision to continue playing hockey while also pursuing a college football opportunity has been a key factor in their resurgence.
The details
Coshenet, who has 16 multi-point games and has recorded at least one point in 20 of the Wildcats' 23 games, credits his linemates for his success. Steele, a freshman, has set the program's record for points by a freshman with 14 goals and 34 points, while Koch, a sophomore, has 15 goals and 33 points. As a trio, they have combined for 51 goals and 113 points, including eight goals and 22 points on the power play.
- Coshenet and four of his Byron High School teammates will join the Southwest Minnesota State University football team in the fall of 2026.
- The Wildcats' game against Osseo on Friday, February 13, 2026 was Coshenet's 23rd game of the season.
- The Section 1, Class 1A playoffs begin on Tuesday, February 18, 2026.

What they’re saying
“Hockey is definitely, definitely something I don't want to let go yet, and it's going to be hard to do, but it's also a good thing to take in football; it'll be a good opportunity for my future. But, it'll definitely be sad (to be done with hockey).”

“Cam's a great leader, a very hard worker in practice and he's always pushing everybody to get better. He's always picking everybody up, lifting the spirits if we're down a goal. That's huge, especially from a young guy. … That's something you want on your team.”
— Gabe Coshenet, Senior forward (postbulletin.com)
“And Nolan — he's something. I really like him. … He's been playing great and he's a player you're going to want to watch in the future. Very talented.”
