Playing without two of their top scorers, the Superior Spartans turned to sophomore guard Beckam Lull, who caught fire from beyond the arc with 8 three-pointers and a game-high 30 points to power his team to a convincing 76-54 win over the Duluth Denfeld Hunters on Tuesday.
Why it matters
The victory throws another wrench in the topsy-turvy Lake Superior Conference race, as Denfeld had an inside track to clinching the league crown before this loss. Superior can even mathematically claim a share of the title by the end of the week, proving the Spartans are a force to be reckoned with in the conference.
The details
Lull's dynamic scoring performance was a culmination of steady growth over the course of the season, according to head coach Kory Deadrick. The Spartans set the tone early with a smothering defensive effort, leading to easy scoring opportunities for Lull, Landon Anrig, and Colson Schumacher. Denfeld struggled to find secondary scoring beyond Carter Brown, who finished with 29 points.
- The game was played on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.
- Denfeld will close out their regular season schedule on Friday, February 27, 2026, against Marshall.
- Superior will host Wausau West on Friday, March 6, 2026, in the WIAA regionals.
The players
Beckam Lull
A 6-foot-1 sophomore guard for the Superior Spartans who caught fire from beyond the arc, knocking down 8 three-pointers and scoring a game-high 30 points.
Kory Deadrick
The head coach of the Superior Spartans, who praised Lull's growth and the performance of his senior leaders Landon Anrig and Colson Schumacher.
Carter Brown
A senior for the Duluth Denfeld Hunters who finished the game with 29 points, but struggled to get secondary scoring support from his teammates.
Phil Homere
The head coach of the Duluth Denfeld Hunters, who acknowledged his team's struggles to make shots and stop Superior's defensive pressure.
Landon Anrig
A senior for the Superior Spartans who provided scoring punch alongside Lull, finishing with 14 points.
What they’re saying
“Early in the year it took him a little bit to get ready to play varsity basketball, being only a sophomore. I think in these last two months he's really coming into it, and he has confidence. I mean, anywhere on the floor, he's pretty dangerous.”
— Kory Deadrick, Head Coach, Superior Spartans
“I think our guys came into the game thinking that one of their better players wasn't playing, thinking that that means we should automatically get the victory. Just from the start you could tell they were hungry for this win, and our guys were just thinking that they were going to lay down and just get the victory.”
— Phil Homere, Head Coach, Duluth Denfeld Hunters
What’s next
Denfeld can still clinch a share of the Lake Superior Conference title if they beat Duluth Marshall at home on Friday, February 27th, though they will have to share it with Hibbing if the Bluejackets win at Grand Rapids on the same night. Superior can also mathematically claim a share of the league title by the end of the week, but that would require major upsets.
The takeaway
This game showcases the growth and potential of the Superior Spartans, who were able to step up without two of their top scorers and defeat a Denfeld team that was previously in control of the conference race. The Spartans' defensive pressure and Beckam Lull's scoring outburst proved to be the difference, highlighting their ability to compete with any team in the Lake Superior Conference.
