Cambridge Mayor Jim Godfrey outlined plans for a major construction project on Highway 95 that will take place over the next two years. The $XX million project will widen the highway, dramatically improve the storm sewer system, and make significant upgrades to the railroad crossing. The project will be done in two phases, with the first phase beginning this spring and the second phase in 2027.
Why it matters
The Highway 95 construction project is a critical infrastructure investment for the city of Cambridge, improving traffic flow, safety, and access to local businesses that could be impacted during the construction. The project also addresses long-standing issues with the aging storm sewer system and railroad crossing, which have caused problems for the community.
The details
The first phase of the Highway 95 project will run from the river to Main Street and be completed in two stages. Stage one from April to mid-summer will focus on construction from Fern Street to east of Dellwood Street, with a detour route of Second Avenue Southwest to Birch Street. Stage two from mid-summer to October will cover Dellwood Street to Main Street, with a detour of Dellwood Street to 11th Avenue Southeast to Garfield Street. The second phase in 2027 will cover Main Street to Fillmore Street. Throughout construction, the city is committed to maintaining east-west pedestrian access and north-south crossing at major intersections.
- The two-year Highway 95 project will begin in April 2026 and be completed by October 2027.
- Phase one of the project will take place from April to October 2026.
- Phase two of the project will take place from April to October 2027.

What they’re saying
“2026 and 2027 will be very busy years for infrastructure and street improvements in the city of Cambridge. We'll continue to work hard every day to make sure that residents are able to safely travel throughout the city.”
— Jim Godfrey, Mayor (hometownsource.com)
“As always, it takes a village to do these things. So we need to work together with MnDot, and the legislature with county, and everybody who's going to be impacted by this, and be patient with the construction; they're working as fast as they safely can. And they are doing their best to finish this on time and under budget.”

What’s next
The judge in the case will decide on Tuesday whether or not to allow Walker Reed Quinn out on bail.
The takeaway
