University Hospitals has partnered with OneDose to deploy eMACC, a first-of-its-kind digital medication administration tool for emergency medical services (EMS). The eMACC system modernizes the proven Medication Administration Cross-Check (MACC) protocol, eliminating human bias during medication verification, reducing wrong-vial and wrong-dose errors, and creating a clear digital verification trail. This system-wide deployment across over 300 EMS agencies in Ohio represents a major advancement in out-of-hospital patient safety.
Why it matters
Medication errors are a persistent challenge in emergency medical care, putting patient lives at risk. By adopting the eMACC system, University Hospitals is taking a proactive step to enhance medication safety standards and improve clinical decision-making for EMS providers in the field. This partnership sets a new benchmark for medication safety in the prehospital setting.
The details
The eMACC system was developed in partnership between OneDose and Dr. Paul Misasi, the creator of the original MACC protocol. The digital tool brings the proven MACC workflow directly into the hands of EMS clinicians, eliminating human bias and creating a clear digital verification trail. University Hospitals' EMS Institute became involved in the beta testing of eMACC early in its development, and the health system has now rolled out the system as the centralized platform for its EMS protocols, medication dosing, and resuscitation support tools.
- In January 2025, University Hospitals rolled out the OneDose app as the centralized location for its EMS protocols.
- In the fall of 2025, University Hospitals became part of the eMACC beta testing program.
