Published on Feb. 23, 2026

A major construction project on Michigan 14 and Interstate 96 in Wayne County has entered its next phase. Crews will now focus on rebuilding the westbound side of the freeway from Sheldon Road to Newburgh Road, along with numerous interchange ramps in Livonia and Plymouth Township. Traffic will be shifted to the newly built eastbound side during this phase of the project.

Why it matters

This project is part of a larger effort to improve the busy M-14/I-96 corridor in Wayne County. The closures and lane shifts will impact commuters and travelers in the area, so it's important for residents to be aware of the upcoming changes to plan their routes accordingly.

The details

Starting March 16, eastbound M-14/I-96 will have two lanes open from Sheldon Road to Newburgh Road, while westbound will have up to two lanes open from Newburgh Road to Sheldon Road. The Newburgh Road entrance ramp to westbound M-14/I-96 will be closed, as will the northbound I-275 ramp to westbound M-14/I-96 and the westbound M-14/I-96 exit to Sheldon Road. Additional ramp closures are planned through late 2026.

  • March 9 through March 16: Eastbound and westbound M-14/I-96 will have at least one lane open between Sheldon Road and Newburgh Road, along with intermittent I-275 ramp closures, for barrier wall installation.
  • March 16 - mid-July: Eastbound M-14/I-96 will have two lanes open from Sheldon Road to Newburgh Road, while westbound will have up to two lanes open from Newburgh Road to Sheldon Road.
