A Michigan state senator has confirmed that a large warehouse facility in Romulus, near the Detroit Metro Airport, will be converted into an ICE detention center. The 300,000-square-foot building is part of the federal government's push to expand ICE activity and expedite deportations across the U.S.
Why it matters
The planned ICE detention facility has sparked concerns from local leaders and residents about the impact on immigrant communities in Southeast Michigan. Critics argue the center will enable further "terrorizing" of immigrant populations and undermine the work of local law enforcement.
The details
According to State Senator Darrin Camilleri, the warehouse on Cogswell Street in Romulus will be used by ICE and the Department of Homeland Security as a detention center. The facility is part of the federal government's efforts to increase ICE operations and detain more people for deportation across the country.
- Earlier in February, the facility being a detention center was merely a rumor, with Bloomberg reporting the Federal Government was eyeing warehouse centers in the Romulus area for a 500-bed facility.
- On Friday, pictures of the building revealed DHS paperwork on the doors, confirming the plans.

What they’re saying
“Let's call this ICE facility what it really is - an ill-constructed jail that would enable ICE to further terrorize our immigrant communities across Southeast Michigan. It's critical that at this moment we stand united and send a clear message to this administration; this detention center is not welcome in Romulus or anywhere across our state.”
— Darrin Camilleri, Michigan State Senator
What’s next
On Monday night, State Senator Camilleri and Romulus Mayor Robert McCraight will join FOX 2 for an exclusive conversation about the planned detention facility and their strong opposition to it.
The takeaway
The planned ICE detention center in Romulus has sparked outrage from local leaders who vow to use every tool available to prevent the facility from being established, arguing it will further marginalize immigrant communities in Southeast Michigan.
