The Bemidji State men's hockey team broke out of its seven-game losing streak last Saturday with a 7-1 win over Northern Michigan. The Beavers are now looking to build on that momentum as they take on Ferris State, who is currently in a battle to avoid last place in the CCHA. Bemidji State is focused on executing their game and playing for their eight seniors who are seeing their final collegiate seasons.
Why it matters
The win over Northern Michigan was a much-needed boost for the Beavers, who had fallen firmly into the bottom half of the CCHA standings during their skid. A strong showing against Ferris State could help them climb back up the standings and secure a spot in the Mason Cup playoffs in March.
The details
Bemidji State sophomore defenseman Luke Roelofs said the team had almost forgotten the feeling of winning, with their last victory coming on Nov. 22. The Beavers are currently in sixth place in the CCHA, nine points out of the last home-ice position. Coach Tom Serratore said the team has been focused on improving their own game, rather than worrying too much about the opponent. Ferris State, which is 4-24-0 and 3-17-0 in the CCHA, has lost 12 consecutive games and is in a battle with Northern Michigan to avoid last place.

What they’re saying
“You almost forgot the feeling a little bit. It had been a while since we sang that song and listened to some good music on the speakers and had a good bus ride back home. It was a special feeling. Sharing wins with these guys is special. I love all of those guys like brothers.”
— Luke Roelofs, Sophomore defenseman (Yahoo Sports)
“It's crazy, I've been so focused on Bemidji State, and we've all been so focused on trying to get back on track and worried about what we're doing — our special teams, our in-zone play, our forecheck, how we can get better reloading, how we can get better defensively, little things in these games that are razor-thin. We're just trying to worry about us, so I don't know much about Ferris State.”
— Tom Serratore, Head coach (Yahoo Sports)
What’s next
The judge in the case will decide on Tuesday whether or not to allow Walker Reed Quinn out on bail.
The takeaway
This case highlights growing concerns in the community about repeat offenders released on bail, raising questions about bail reform, public safety on SF streets, and if any special laws to govern autonomous vehicles in residential and commercial areas.
