A DeVos-owned boat dealer, Walstrom Marine, plans to open an 80- to 100-slip marina in 2028 on a waterfront property it acquired last year near Traverse City. The company plans to demolish an existing office building and construct the mixed-use marina with service, showroom and office space, as well as potential future condominiums.
Why it matters
This project highlights the continued demand for boat slips in the Traverse City area, which has had a nearly decade-long backlog. The mixed-use development also aligns with the township's master plan for walkable, commercial development along the shoreline.
The details
Walstrom Marine, a DeVos-owned boat dealer, acquired a 2.26-acre commercial property in Elmwood Township last summer and plans to develop an 80- to 100-slip marina on the site. The company will demolish the existing 23,000-square-foot office building and construct the new marina, which will primarily feature 40-, 50- and 60-foot slips for larger boats, as well as service, showroom and office space, and parking. Walstrom is also considering partnering with another developer to add condominiums on the site in the future.
- Walstrom acquired the property last summer.
- The company plans to secure permits this year.
- Walstrom aims to break ground on the marina in 2027.
- Construction is expected to be completed by spring 2028.

What they’re saying
“We think there's a lot of people who would love to upgrade to a new boat but can't tell me where to put it, so we want to be able to handle that, not just from a marina standpoint, but obviously from a dealership standpoint.”
— Jeremy Anderson, President, Walstrom Marine (Crain's Grand Rapids Business)
“If we do that, it'd be really unique and special, but we haven't decided one way or the other whether we're doing it.”
— Jeremy Anderson, President, Walstrom Marine (Crain's Grand Rapids Business)
What’s next
Walstrom plans to solicit bids from general contractors after the project design is complete, which is expected within the next couple of weeks.
The takeaway
This project demonstrates the continued demand for boat slips and marina services in the Traverse City area, as well as the DeVos family's investment in expanding their boat dealer and marina operations across Michigan.
