For the third consecutive season, the Gaylord St. Mary Snowbirds girls basketball team met Frankfort in the Division 4 regional title game, and for the third straight year, Frankfort came out on top, defeating GSM 56-44 and ending the high school careers of the Snowbirds' senior class.

Why it matters

This game marks the third straight year that Gaylord St. Mary has fallen to Frankfort in the regional finals, highlighting Frankfort's dominance over the Snowbirds in recent seasons. The loss also brings an end to the high school careers of GSM's talented senior class, who had led the program to great success over the past three years.

The details

Frankfort's defense was the key to the game, as they were able to limit GSM's top scorer, Payton Glasby, and force the other Snowbirds players to try to beat them. While GSM had success shooting the ball in their previous game, they struggled to find the same rhythm against Frankfort's stifling defense, hitting just 5 three-pointers compared to the 12 they made in the previous round. Frankfort's Addie Jarosz and Riley LaVack each scored 20 points to lead the Panthers to victory.

  • The regional final game was played on Thursday, March 12, 2026.
  • Gaylord St. Mary had defeated Buckley 23 points in the previous round on Monday, March 9, 2026.

What they’re saying

“The best teams are the ones that can be consistent, and that's plagued us a little bit. They'll go out and shoot like they did the other night, then they'll shoot like they did tonight.”

— Pat Schultz, Gaylord St. Mary head coach

“They were really, really physical with Payton. They took her away, and when she doesn't get off, the other kids feed off of her a lot so it can be hard for us to play good basketball from a team perspective.”

— Pat Schultz, Gaylord St. Mary head coach

“They've kept the tradition of St. Mary's Basketball right where it should be. They're a fantastic group. No complaining about Saturday mornings at 8 o'clock. No complaining about lifting three times a week. No complaining about summer workouts. It was good, and that's all you can ask for.”

— Pat Schultz, Gaylord St. Mary head coach

What’s next

The Frankfort girls basketball team will advance to the Division 4 quarterfinals, where they will face the winner of the regional final between Maple City Glen Lake and Suttons Bay.

The takeaway

Gaylord St. Mary's talented senior class has left a lasting legacy on the program, leading the Snowbirds to great success over the past three seasons. However, their high school careers have come to an end with another regional final loss to the dominant Frankfort Panthers, who have proven to be a consistent thorn in the side of the Snowbirds in recent years.
