Paramount Global has purchased Tyler Perry's 25% ownership stake in the BET+ streaming service, leading to the service being phased out and its content library moving to Paramount+. The transition will bring over 1,000 hours of BET programming, including popular shows like All the Queen's Men and The Ms. Pat Show, to the larger Paramount+ platform starting in June.
Why it matters
The move is part of a broader strategy by Paramount to expand the reach of BET's programming and storytelling to a wider audience through the larger Paramount+ platform. While BET+ will no longer operate independently, the BET brand and its cable channel, production arm, and digital platforms will continue as part of Paramount's long-term plans.
The details
Paramount Skydance purchased Tyler Perry's 25% ownership stake in BET+ for an undisclosed amount, though the deal is believed to be worth several million dollars. Beginning in June, over 1,000 hours of BET+ content, including shows like All the Queen's Men, Zatima, The Ms. Pat Show, Average Joe, and Diarra From Detroit, will become available on Paramount+.
- BET+ launched in September 2019, shortly before the Viacom and CBS merger that created Paramount Global.
